An Israelite King

Moshe foretells of a time when the Israelites will live in Israel and decide to appoint a king like all the other nations around them. At that time, Moshe continues, they are to make sure that the king they appoint is Jewish.

This king may only have enough horses for his chariots and no more. Moshe warns that if a king has too many horses, he will bring the nation back to Egypt to buy horses there as that is where they come from and they are not allowed to return to Egypt.

This king may have no more than 18 wives and he may not have an excess of gold and silver, only enough for his army.

He should have two Torah scrolls written on his behalf - one big one to be placed in his treasury and a second smaller one for him to carry with him wherever he goes. If he gets these scrolls written, he will merit that his kingdom will endure.

He is to read this Torah his entire life so that he learns to fear G-d and keep the Torah's commandments. Doing so will keep him humble and prevent him from transgressing even minor commandments such as one enacted by a prophet.

In so learning Torah, he will merit to have his kingdom endure and that if his son is so worthy, he shall succeed him.
